If you know me, you'll know that I typically try to add (or subtract) something from my life at the start of each month and then stick with it for at least 26 days.
This June, I'm going to explore something called a Sit Spot.
While it may sound like a place you get sent to when you've been bad, it's actually the opposite! It's a place you go to chill, reflect, linger, gather your wits, notice what's around you, slow down, and perhaps reconnect with yourself.
A Sit Spot is a mindfulness practice that invites you to visit the same place a few times each week and simply observe. Notice what you see. What you hear. What changes. What stays the same. How nature unfolds around you - and what unfolds within you.
I realize the 10-day silent retreat that I did in November is a bit much for most people and even the 12-hour walk is a big undertaking - but the Sit Spot (based on the research of Dr. Tara Tiger Brown) - it's within reach for everyone.
One spot. That's all.
It doesn't have to be a forest or a beach (though it certainly can be). Maybe it's a patch of grass in your yard, a chair beside a plant on your balcony, a corner of your workplace grounds, or a neighbourhood park bench.
The same spot. Ten-ish minutes. Several times a week.
That's it.
June feels like a lovely month to give it a try.
What spot is calling you?
What place might help you lower your stress and increase your well-being?
You don't have to do a thing but show up.
(Special thanks to Forest Guide Maria Verdicchio for introducing me to this beautiful practice.)
